The Functions of Manuka Honey
We all know that natural remedies from aloe vera, tea tree oil, or manuka honey are good for health. No need to doubt the healing effect; they’re working. And no need about side effects either because they don’t cause any side effects. How come natural ingredients cause side effects, unless you’re allergic to them?
Manuka honey is the honey produced by bees feeding around manuka bush – the Leptospermum scoparium – in New Zealand. The honey is believed to have antibacterial agent and good to treat open and infected wounds. But the level of antibacterial agent is different, based on the source and the manufacturing process. A research conducted within 345 samples from 26 floral sources showed different levels of antibacterial agent. Although they may contain different level of antibacterial agent, they’re all able to treat injury and infection. This fact has been proven with the use of this honey by the native people in treating infection and injury. They claimed by applying the honey over an open wound will soothe and reduce the inflammation and then recover it without causing any infection.
Manuka honey is now also manufactured as supplements. When scientists observed and had several tests, they found out that manuka honey also contains several vitamin and minerals. It’s also the source of protein and amino acids, which has important function in metabolism and nutrition.
